for control measures to be applied.
- Checks the efficiency of control measures
(i.e., can be used as a quality control aid.
- can reduce the amount of spray/application and
number of applications required when used correctly
How the System Works.
In stored product pest control Pheromone traps are placed in and around bins, warehouses and storage areas to guard against any potentially damaging infestation.
Increasingly, traps are also placed outside the storage building to detect the presence in the area of any harmful insects
A Pheromone program is the ideal tool for pest control managers seeking a safe, efficient and precise monitoring system for trapping.
Stored Product Pest
Monitoring And Trapping
A Pheromone system uses safe, non-toxic materials that may be used without restrictions.
The traps have been shewn to be highly effective in capturing flying insects such as the INDIAN MEAL MOTH and others. These traps are lined with an adhesive capture surface and each trap is loaded with a lure. The male insects approach the trap expecting to find a female and are captured on the sticky surface.
It is doubtful if any building in which foodstuffs are stored or handled is ever entirely free from insects; most premises in which human foods are present support a thriving insect population. Even with very high standards of cleanliness and hygiene it seems inevitable that design or practice will provide inaccessible locations which continue to serve as centers for recolonization of pests. Visual detection is difficult, and if visible, by that time one generally has a moderate to severe infestation. Pheromone traps give an early warning of potential problems.
Placement Of Traps
Infested rooms should have no fewer than 1 trap/300 square feet, with intervals of 30 feet between traps. The traps should be suspended approximately 6 to 9 feet above the floor. With higher ceilings, increase the density. It is recommended that traps be set in corridors leading to and from infested areas. Rooms adjacent to infested areas should be trapped and monitored.
As a preventive measure it is advisable to trap areas where there are incoming materials and storage.
In many cases it may be advisable to place traps outside the building in order to identify the direction and source of infestations and to control the problem before it reaches stored product areas.
